Why Tamil Nadu experiences intense cold weather recently?

The director of the Chennai Meteorological Centre, Mr. S.Balachandran explained the reason why Tamil Nadu has been experiencing intense cold weather over the last few days.
The Director had a session with the press reporters today (Tuesday, 29th December).
He explained that the Northeast monsoon rains have been lesser than average expected level.
In this condition, cold winds are blowing from the North towards the South leading to a dip in the temperature, much less than the normal level expected in this season.He explained that this is the reason for the intense cold experienced in Tamil Nadu.
He also informed that there would be rains for 3 days from 1st December to 3rd December.
