Samples of milk and honey available in the market for sales are to undergo quality test by the food regulator FSSAI. The CEO of the regulatory, Pawan Kumar Agarwal said this move is being made following complaints from consumers.

Speaking about this at the CII’s Food Safety and Quality summit, he said they have set up a panel to review the existing standards. This is to streamline the quality norms. A few commodities are kept under surveillance. At present, we are surveilling honey and milk and in the upcoming days, the same will be done on more products.

There are complaints on these two products and hence we are collecting samples of the two. Addressing the event, he said the pace of standard settings in the country is being accelerated.

A considerable portion of the work is done and there are furthermore to do too. Most of the standards need to be maintained in order to ensure safe food in the following months. Recently, the regulatory has fixed standards for over six food items and also nutraceuticals and health supplements.

This panel of different stakeholders is set to review the existing ones and give their suggestions. The scientific committee will consider the same.
