Chennaites will never forget the power with which Cyclone Vardah hit Chennai on December 12. the speed was more than 140 KMPH. The impact can be seen and felt by everyone.

Well, how are cylones named?
The actual tradition of naming of cylones started with hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean. If a cylclonic storm reached a speed or crosses more than 74 KMPH it is called a Cyclone, Typhoon, Hurricane.

Hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, they are all the same, but have different names. In Atlantic it is called Hurricane, Typhoon in the Pacific and Cyclone in the Indian Ocean.

When did the naming start?
In recent times, in the year 2000 to be precise, cyclones formed in the Indian ocean region were started to be named. A formula was agreed by countries in 2004.

Eight countries in the Indian ocean region - Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand came together to name the cyclones.

Maarutha, Next Cyclone in Indian Ocean
The next Cyclone to hit Indian ocean has been named as Maarutha, by Sri lanka. Even before a cyclone is formed the name for a cylone will be given by a country.

Though Maarutha cyclone has not yet formed it is already called as the next cylone.
