A tree in general has amazing features or qualities. Apart from providing shelter, a tree can protect life and also destroy lives.  Let us see some of the features of trees. What type of tree we need to plant especially in times of monsoon to withstand even tough cyclones?

There are a handful of trees that will stand up to a strong, category five cyclone like Vardah. The type of trees that you grow in a garden could make a difference between your survival and destruction.

Trees that protect Trees like golden cane, cabbage palms, and date palms can withstand category five winds.

Coconuts will snap or tip over in strong cyclonic winds, especially if they haven`t been de-nutted. Other best trees include paperbarks that naturally grow beside rivers like Melaleuca leucodendra. Native cypress pines, pandanus, beefwood and Leichhardt trees are tough trees that can withstand strong winds.

Destroying trees
Usually fast growing, short-lived plants are more likely to come down in a cyclone than slow growing plants. The plant that grows slow has more density and strong timber. The strongest of all trees are those that naturally grow in wind and flood prone environments such as river banks and beaches.

Making trees safer

We can help trees to be stronger by pruning and watering. Reducing the height and wind resistance of a tree will help. We have to be careful about weak branches attached to trunks. When you water a tree, water it more, less often.

Occasional, deep watering will encourage deep rooting and a strong tree. Keep your garden cyclone safe as it can help you save life and property.
