The central government has accorded special grade recognition for the biomedical engineering department of Anna University.
University Grants Commission (UGC ) grants special quality recognition award to the educational institutions which excel in the higher education and research. The educational institutions accorded this recognition will receive Crores of assistance from the central government.
UGC has already granted special rank recognition status to many Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu as well as several departments of Anna University.
In a further development, the department of Biomedical Engineering Instrumentation is also granted this special recognition from the central government. Also, a grant of Rs. 23.12 Crores has been sanctioned for pursuing research in new fields in the current Academic Year.
On this, the registrar of Anna University explained that this recognition has been accorded on the basis of research activities over the last 23 years. The need for the latest technology by the medical field is growing at the rate of 15 per cent every year.
This necessitates the undertaking of several research activities. The departments of Medical Electronics, biotechnology, Instrumentation, Medical Physics, and Electronics of Anna University have joined together in the effort to get this special rank recognition.
