America has decided to cut the legal immigrants by half within next 10 years. Two top U.S. Senators have proposed legislation to cut the number of legal immigrants to the U.S. This is a setback to Indians who have decided to become the citizen of America and also for the Indians who wants a green card.

Republican Senator Tom Cotton and David Perdue have recommended this Bill in order to toughen the immigration laws in order to provide employment to Americans. The foreigners cannot migrate to America if the immigration laws are made tougher. The senators have also mentioned that there will be no place in America for the foreigners who have no skills.

Currently 10 lakhs people are given green card. Similarly 5 Lakhs people have been given permanent citizen. If the new recommendation is implemented, this number will be reduced by half.

It is seen that this Bill can be easily passed since this has the support of Trump administration. At the same time, the bill will have impact on Indian Americans who are currently waiting to get their green cards on employment-based categories.

The current wait period of an Indian to get a green card is 10 years but if the Bill becomes the law it will take 35 years. The Bill has not mentioned anything about H-1B visas. There is sharp decline of legal immigrants in the last 10 years. Because of this the employment opportunity and wages have come down for Americans. In order to prevent this, only talented people should be permitted like in Australia and Canada.
