Got any ideas to run a marathon? You may have to think twice. While running a long marathon causes physical stress, you equally face short term kidney injury, according to scientists including one from the Indian origin.

Yale University researchers from the US studied a small group of people that took part in a marathon. Blood and urine samples from these participants were collected post event. There were several traces of kidney injuries including serum creatinine levels, kidney cells on microscopy and proteins in urine.

About 82 percent runners were involved in the study. All of them had stage 1 acute kidney injury (AKI) after the race. Under the AKI condition, the kidneys do not filter the waste from blood. The physical stress of marathon will seem as though it is an injury that is more or less similar to hospitalized patients case. The kidney responds to the stress and gets affected by surgical and medical complications, said Chirag Parikh of Yale University.

Constant increase in the core body temperature is the primary cause of marathon related kidney diseases. Dehydration, decrease in blood flow in kidneys, etc are the other reasons, the researchers add.
