Why is it too sultry today? This perhaps was a question most of us asked yesterday! Here is the answer to it.

Sunday is recorded as the hottest day of 2017 so far. In Meenambakkam, the temperature recorded was whopping 37.8 degrees Celsius. Coming on to the temperature at Nungambakkam station, it was 35.3 degrees and did not rise beyond normal level.

Bugging out their eyes, the weather experts claim this high temperature to be 2.9 percent higher than Meenambakkam’s average temperature. In Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam, 35 degrees Celsius is the average normal temperature during April.

Popular weather bloggers blame on drastic wind pattern changes for the abnormal increase in temperature. The sea breeze got set around 11.30 am which is quite early. Nevertheless, the changes in wind pattern have raised humidity levels in Chennai. The temperature rise is mainly because of south westerly wind.

Will the April temperature reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius? Well, as per Met data, 40.8 degrees Celsius is the maximum temperature recorded during the same month last year. This is the second highest in April, whereas the highest is 42.8 degrees Celsius on 27th April 1908.

The southeasterly and southwesterly winds play around with land. While the former cools the land down, the latter drastically humidifies it.

We will have to bear with extremely sultry weather for one week, say weather experts.
