All the flight passengers who head towards domestic airport terminals will need to completely rely on signals and SMS sent to them by airlines, because the Airports Authority of India intends making it a silent airport similar to international standards.
Starting from 1st May, Airlines will not be making any announcement for boarding calls in domestic terminals. This is for avoiding noise pollution within the premises. This system is already in practice at airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and few others.
According to an AAI official, this is a decision made complying with passenger suggestions. There were complaints that the racket made by airline announcements regarding boarding gates and boarding call during peak hours annoy passengers and make them uncomfortable. We got in discussions with the airlines and other agencies to work out a plan and get rid of the practice of boarding announcements.
According to a statement by the airports, changes in boarding time, baggage delivery belts or other information shall be passed via SMS. When there is change in boarding gates, restricted announcements will be made.
There needs to be increased coordination between AAI staff and airline staff. The airport officials will be assigning the check-in counters, baggage delivery belts, boarding gates, etc in advance so as to avoid commotion.
