Tamil Nadu heatwave causes discomfort, Chennai to remain hot

Posted on: 15/May/2017 4:19:44 PM
Chennai weather has remained hot for quite some time now. Rainy days have remained way far away from the region for a long time. While some areas were witnessing rains, during the last 24 hours, temperatures have increased significantly over northern parts of Tamil Nadu, Chennai has also been witnessing hot weather with discomfort. These conditions are attributed to the setting up of westerly dry winds as Tamil Nadu is on the leeward side. Thus, winds blowing from the Arabian Sea deplete most of the moisture towards Kerala and dry winds travel towards Tamil Nadu leading to increase in temperatures.

At present, maximums in these areas are settling between 40 and 44 degrees. Being coastal areas, humidity levels are already on the higher side. Thus, the combination of high humidity and high maximums increase the feel like temperatures and discomfort. As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, no relief is likely in some parts of Tamil Nadu during the next 2 to 3 days. Interior districts are witnessing some rains due to the persisting trough running from Interior Karnataka.

Thus, marginal relief is expected in the interior districts due to on and off weather activity, however, Chennai and adjoining areas will remain hot with humidity levels sky high. Southwest Monsoon has already advanced over Bay of Bengal. We expect Monsoon rains to commence over Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
