Monsoon anticipation is likely to finally get over as Southwest Monsoon is likely to appear anytime now. The long wait is finally going to get over.

Conditions are favourable for the onset of Monsoon over Kerala during the next 24 hours. All the criteria have already been met. Westerly wind field is strengthening and rainfall over Lakshadweep and Kerala has picked up pace.

Since last 48 hours, good rains have been occurring over most of the designated states of Kerala which are the deciders for Monsoon onset. Outgoing longwave radiation is less than 200. We expect Monsoon to make onset over Kerala during the next 24 hours. Skymet had already stated the onset around May 29 with an error margin of three days.

After the onset of Monsoon over Kerala, rains are likely to increase over Kerala and Karnataka coast. Simultaneously, Karnataka, Konkan and Goa along with Maharashtra will also receive good Pre-Monsoon showers. Mumbai will also continue with good Pre-Monsoon rains.

Models indicate that the progress of Southwest Monsoon will remain steady during the beginning. Southwest Monsoon will progress as per its scheduled dates over South and Northeast India.

Cyclone Mora which has formed in the east-central Bay and is expected to make landfall over Bangladesh by afternoon of May 30 is expected to enhance the rainfall activity over Northeast and East India.

Thus, contrary to popular belief, Cyclone Mora is expected to enhance the progress of Monsoon over Bay of Bengal, Northeast India and will help in strengthening the westerly field over Kerala coast.
