It has been planned to operate the battery-driven buses in Chennai Metro. 10 battery-operated buses are scheduled to arrive from Delhi to reach Chennai in 10 days for conducting the 1st phase tests.

The Chennai Metro Transport Corporation operates over 3700 buses in 806 routes in the city and out. There are different types of buses – ordinary, deluxe, and air-conditioned. However, mainly due to lack of proper maintenance, most of these buses are seen operating in fairly damaged conditions.

In this situation, The Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation has decided to try and operate battery-driven buses mainly in order to reduce the fuel expenses and pollution-free operation.

The department officials explained that with a view to operating in a pollution-free environment, it has been decided to try operating battery-operated buses for the 1st time.

In the 1st phase of this plan, 10 battery-operated buses will arrive from Delhi in 10 days and thorough tests will be carried out by the high-level expert committee.

After this, test runs will be conducted for 2 months.

Only in case the test runs are successful and it is confirmed that safety aspects are satisfactory, the buses will be allowed to operate as public services.

These battery-operated buses will have facilities such as GPS and CCTV camera.
