The project activity of laying an outer ring road from Nemilichery to Minjur is 95% complete. The Tamil Nadu Highways Development Corporation has informed that this would be opened for public in the next 6 months.

Higher officials of the organisation informed that the projects of laying outer ring roads are taken up mainly to reduce the heavy traffic congestion in the Chennai Metro City and its suburban areas.

The 1st Phase of a project was completed between Vandalur and Nemilichery was completed and was opened to the public in 2009.

In the 2nd Phase, the project of laying a 6-lane highway between Nemilichery and Minjur via Thiruvotriyur, Ponneri, and Panchetti has been in progress over the last 4 years. 4 toll gates are also being set up in this route. The project is now 95% completed. It is expected to be opened to the public within the next 6 months.

Once this is open, the heavy material-laden vehicles coming from various directions to Chennai need not enter the Chennai Metro city – they will able to reach the Ennore, Port, and suburban industries via this route. Thus, the traffic density will be down, reducing the traffic congestion.
