SpiceJet to increase fees on excessive baggage

It is likely that SpiceJet will increase the fee quoted for extra luggage. The price may be Rs 300 per kg, say sources following the initiative by Delhi High Court to cap fee quoted towards excessive baggage checked in on private airlines.

On Wednesday, the Director General of Civil Aviation had capped the fee for excessive baggage of up to 15 to 20 kg as Rs 100 per kg. As per sources, the fee for excessive baggage will be increased from the existing Rs 100 per kg to Rs 300 per kg.

Justice Vibhu Bakhru has ignored the rule imposed by DGCA on 10th June which allows private airlines to charge Rs 100 extra for up to 20 kg of extra baggage as compared to the earlier rates that ranged between Rs 220 and Rs 350. This circular will be effective starting from 1st July, as there is no stay imposed on the same by the court.

There is no one to respond to SpiceJet spokesperson. According to DGCA circular rolled out in June 2016, for up to 20 kg, airlines are allowed to charge only Rs 100 extra as against the previous rates that ranged between Rs 220 and Rs 350.
