The Tamil Nadu State Government has informed that all vehicle drivers must keep their original driving licences while driving from today (Friday, 1st September).
The procedure of giving separate licences for individual cars and 2-wheelers has been in vogue in Tamil Nadu. As there are several stages of activities to be completed to obtain the driving licence, most vehicle drivers keep their original driving licences safely at home and take and keep only the copy of the driving licence.
In this situation, with the increasing trend of road accidents leading to loss of lives, the state government transport minister Vijayabhaskar announced last week that it would be mandatory for all vehicle owners to keep their original drivers` licenses with them while driving.
Subsequently, a petition was submitted against this proposal to the Chennai High Court. Taking this public petition for enquiry, the judges ruled that it is mandatory to keep the original driving licences while driving.
After this ruling, the Police Department has strictly warned that all the vehicle owners must keep their original driving licences with the while driving from today (1st September), Violating or failing to observe this order will lead to legal action.
