Jio to step into home broadband services

It is likely that Reliance Jio will launch its very high-speed Fiber to Home broadband service in more than 30 cities in 2018, say reports.
With its bulky TV service, FTTH broadband service shall get launched in more than 100 million TV households in these cities encompassing tier-2 and 3 cities. Furthermore, it has said that over 50 million households will be covered in the first phase.
With its 4G services, Jio has already spread across 120 million subscribers. For this, it has laid over 3,00,000 km of optic fiber in India. Almost half of 30,000 km of this fiber is made through long term contract with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communication.
Earlier, RIL had announced that Jio had initiated fiber to home in trials in about 10 cities including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Vadodara. This network can carry data speed of up to 1Gbps.
In its second phase of expansions, the company is eyeing on mega clusters that has high-rise apartments and commercial establishments to network a hundred locations by December this year.
A special router that can be connected with multiple devices will be provided for a refundable deposit of Rs 4,500. As it has obtained a multi-service operator license, it can also provide TV services, say reports. This trial will be made in an invite and feasibility basis.
Jio is eyeing to make a revenue of about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per month out of subscribers. Earlier, Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries said that the next big monetization opportunity is optical fiber and fixed landline broadband.
Jio will stay on track of optical fiber connectivity to home, public places and enterprises. A lot of infrastructures are already set up, he further added stating that the progress will be updated to the stakeholders from time to time.
