Following the steep increase in the price of eggs, the price of omelettes in the hotels and restaurants has also shot up – this is now sold at Rs. 15 to Rs. 20.

Even as the production of eggs has gone down from the poultries, there has been a simultaneous increase in demand for eggs.

Eggs, which were sold at Rs. 5 per piece last year, are now being sold at Rs. 6 since the last few days. As the price of egg got up, the hotels and restaurants have naturally followed with an increase in the price of omelettes.

Before the price, omelette was being sold at Rs. 10 per piece. Now, it is sold at Rs. 15 to Rs. 20. As the winter onset is close at hand, there would be an increase in the number of people who include eggs in their diet and there would be a subsequent increase in the demand for eggs.

Some of the hotel owners explained that the bigger onions are used to prepare omelettes as the price of small onions has rocketed. As such, the price of big onions also has gone up. It is sold at Rs. 45 to Rs. 60 per kg.

Combine this price rise with that of the egg price – naturally, there has been an increase in the price of omelette, half-boiled, and bread-omelette. Subsequently, the demand for omelettes has also come down. This price increase is expected to be only for a short period – old price may be restored by January.
