Heading to Assam for importing sand carried out by Tamil Nadu officials

In order to meet the demands of sand starved state of Tamil Nadu, the officials belonging to the PWD or Public Works Department left for the state of Assam. The main objective was to import sand from this north-eastern state.

Recently the chief minister of Assam, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal made his presence felt in Chennai. During his visit the chief minister spoke about the sand supply from his state to Tamil Nadu for building purposes.

On Wednesday, 17th January three officials belonging to PWD Chennai left for Assam to see that viability of sourcing sand from Assam. Brahmaputra River plus other places in Assam would be visited by these three officials.

It was also revealed by an official that the three officials have gone to Assam to look at the resources present there. The official then explained about the problems involved in sourcing sand from other states. It must be noted that the state government earlier said that through this PWD only sale of sand brought from union territories as well as from other states should be carried out.

It must not be forgotten that in the month of November in 2017, Madurai bench of Madras High Court instructed the closure of all sand quarries inside 6 months of time period. It was also said that no new sand quarries must come up in the state of TN.

It is important to note that CREDAI or Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India Chennai chapter had spoken about the transportation of sand from Assam to the state of West Bengal and then sand could be transported to Chennai through ship.

Mr. Suresh Krishnan who is CREDAI Chennai president expressed his thoughts and said in order to overcome this acute shortage of sand, the developer’s body has planned to ferry sand from Orissa. He also said he was happy about transporting sand from Assam state.
