The state minister for Transport, Vijayabhaskar, announced that the monthly bus-pass at Rs. 1000 will be distributed for use in the Chennai Metro City buses.
The state government of Tamil Nadu had increased the bus fares by more than 60% on 19th January putting the common people to great hardships and discontent.
The state Chief Minister E. Palanisamy explained the fare increase that as the buses are meant for the common people, only they should counter the loss incurred.
In this situation, there was a proposal to increase the monthly bus-pass fare to be used in the Chennai Metro City as well. It was gathered that it was to be increased from Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1300. Further, it was also gathered that the 1-day bus-pass was also to be increased from Rs. 50 to Rs. 80.
It is informed that the new bus-passes will be available from 14th February. The increase in bus fares led to great discontent and anger among the public. In this situation, the state transport Minister Vijayabhaskar informed that the monthly bus-pass will continue to be sold at the same Rs. 1000.
The monthly bus-pass at Rs. 240 has been revised to Rs. 320 and Rs. 280 bus pass has been hiked to Rs. 370.
The issue of raising the daily bus-pass fare from Rs. 50 is under review. So far, over the last 5 days, 1.16 lakh persons have registered for LLR for Amma 2-wheeler scheme.
The minister informed that activities are being initiated to modernise the transport department. There is no change in the rates for students concession passes.
