Along with floods, volcanic eruptions, earth quakes etc cyclone is one of the natural disasters people in this world face these days. During cyclones our smooth daily life changes and we find it very difficult. Better disaster management at the times of cyclones is very important.
The latest news that has come out now is Tamil Nadu government is planning for better disaster management during cyclones and for that satellite based applications plus short wave radio system have been utilised. This was confirmed by Mr. Rajendra Ratnoo IAS, commissioner of disaster management. He shared his thoughts regarding this issue at the National Science Day event conducted by Indian Meteorological Society of Chennai chapter on Wednesday 28 the February 2018 and he attracted the attention of many present in the event.
For an application to aid deep sea communication ISRO or Indian Space Research Organisation has joined hands with INCOIS or Indian National Centre for Ocean Information services is well known. This application would be implemented as soon as work by these two organisations is successful. It is now said that for disaster management meteorological department would start a dedicated channel and that would be superb.
Mr Rajendra Ratnoo expressed his thoughts about the cyclone Ockhi that made lives difficult for the people living in Kanyakumari and in nearby districts. He spoke about how on 30th of November 2017 the cyclone crossed 70km southwest of Kanyakumari and how meteorological department got information regarding this cyclone on 12 noon on the previous day. He further spoke about how there are nearly 70 hours for disaster management.
Mr Rajendra Ratnoo threw light on how IMD gave instructions regarding cyclone through Whatsapp and the details were sent to all district collectors belonging to south Tamil Nadu.
It must be noted that instructions like advising fishermen not to go into the sea plus emergency operation centre at the collectorate. There were also instructions regarding strengthening with special staffs in places like Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi etc.
Instructions from the commissioner through phone to the director of fisheries were also given at that time. Local radio and media also played huge role at the time of this cyclone as they warned the public to stay indoors by cautioning them about the bad weather.
It is now revealed that there are many plans and these include starting a registry for fishermen, installing GPS and other emergency system for communication plus installation of life saving gadgets for the fishermen vessels etc.
