For the New year (as per the Tamil calendar) on the occasion of the Chithirai Vishu, the temple corridors of Lord Ayyapa Sabarimala will be opened today evening (10th April, Tuesday).
The 1st day of the 1st Tamil calendar month Chithirai is celebrated as Tamil New Years Day. The same day in Kerala is celebrated as the Vishu festival.
This auspicious Chithirai Vishu festival is annually celebrated in a grand manner in all the famous temples in Kerala – Sabarimala, Guruvayur and the temples located adjacent to Kanyakumari area.
On the occasion of the Vishu new year, the Keralites prepare special food itms known as Vishu-kaineettam, Vishu-Kani, and Vishu-meals. As a long time tradirtion, the Keralites follow the routine of visitng the temples, pray, and reeive fruits as Prasadam, receiving cash, etc. as it will bring prosperity to the family.
This year, the occasion of the grand Vishu festival falls on 15th April. On this occasion, the temple corridors of the famous Lord Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala are to be opened today evening (Tuesday, 10th April).
Though the corridors are opened only in the evening, all the tradional pooja in the morning will be conducted as usual.
So, the corridors of the Sabarimala temple, being opened for the occasion of Vishu festival, will remain open for the next 10 days.
Melsanthi Chief Proest A. V. Unnikrishnan will open the temple corridos at today evening in the presence of the temple’s senior priests Tanthri Kandararu, Maheshaararu, and Mohnararu.
After this, from tomorrow (Wedneasday, 11th April), the pooja in the temple will commence as first 1st Phase of Asthadraviya Ganapathy Homam.
The temple administrators from the Devasthanam explained in this regard:
‘Sahasrakalabhishekham, kalababihishekham, Pushpabhishekham, Padi Poojai, Ashtabhishekham, Udhayasthamanu Pooja will all be performed as per schedule during the next 10 days.’
Before the Uchi Pooja to be performed on Thursday, the sacred water will be sprayed from 1000 copper pots. Saharakalabhishekham will be performed on the noon of Wednesday.
The tanthri of the temple esplained: ‘In the Sabarimala Ayyappan temple, Vishu Kani Darshan will be performed from 4.00 AM to 7.00 AM on 15th April.
