These days we often hear about a term called Glycemic Index. This glycemic index or GI is nothing but relative ranking of carbohydrate in foods and the effect on the blood glucose levels.
It is worthy to note that foods that have got low GI of 55 or less are digested at a slow rate, absorbed and finally results in lower rise in blood glucose levels. Foods that have high GI increase blood glucose levels in us suddenly.
These below mentioned foods have got high GI and this must be taken into consideration before consuming these foods.
Bananas intake - We all regularly consume bananas. It is clear that over ripe bananas have more sugar content than regular bananas. This over ripe bananas with many brown spots in it has got GI of 70 or above and this is high when compared to other bananas having GI of 30. So it is always good to eat slightly green bananas and consume them before they get ripened.
Potatoes consumption - Potatoes are eaten by many of us is known. It must be noted that the GI of potatoes depend on factors such as variety, way the potatoes are cooked. Sweet potatoes with its skin have GI of 44 to 48. This is good for health but peeling their skin and consuming results in increase in the blood sugar levels. Instant mashed potatoes have got GI of 87 and baked russets have got GI of 111.
Pineapple intake - Pineapple is an amazing fruit and is consumed by us without knowing that its GI is 66. It is important to note that this GI is high for canned variety and consuming whole fresh variety is superb.
Carrots intake - Carrots are consumed by many of us as these carrots provide us many health benefits. The shocking piece of news is the carrots have high GI of 71. So eating carrots in moderate amounts would be good for our health instead of totally avoiding it.
Consuming parsnips - Related to carrot and parsley, parsnips have got the highest GI of 97. This is the highest GI present amongst all the vegetables. So it is important that we must try to avoid this type of vegetable as consuming it would increase the blood sugar levels.
Brown rice consumption - This brown rice has got GI of 97 and it is said that brown rice breaks down easily and gets absorbed in our blood stream. Intake of this brown rice often leads to increase in the blood sugar levels.
Rice consumption - Rice is one common food most of us take every day. It is revealed that this rice has the highest GI of all grains and is 85 to 91. Consuming rice leads to increase in blood sugar levels.
