Rehabilitation of ponds and lakes in Chennai city to be done soon

Those who are concerned very much about the rehabilitation of ponds and lakes in Chennai here is a piece of news that would bring happiness to them.

It is now revealed that GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation is taking effort in the above mentioned rehabilitation works and has organized a meeting with the Commercial Public Companies and NGOs for this purpose. The city of Chennai has got as many as 206 lakes and ponds and 32 out of those would be rehabilitated. This has been confirmed by the GCC. An amount of Rs 5.82 crores has been allotted from the smart city funds for this purpose. This is for the first phase.

Mr. S.P. Velusamy minister for municipal administration and rural development inaugurated the rehabilitation of Villivakkam Lake costing Rs 16 crores. He also gave orders to arrange a meeting to renovate all the ponds and lakes in Chennai.

The meeting was headed by Mr. Karthikeyan who is the commissioner and an amount of Rs 25.29 crores was declared by the GCC to the CRRT or Chennai River Restoration Trust so that Kadapakam Lake and Nesavalar Nagar Lake could be restored. For the lakes in the Kosathalaiyaar basin an amount of Rs 40.07 crores was allotted.

It is important to note that under the TNUIFSL or Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructural Financial Services Ltd, project statement to renovate 24 lakes and ponds was issued and renovation of as many as 104 remaining lakes and ponds was also emphasised.

According to the commissioner Mr Karthikeyan, GCC is happy to join hands with private companies and NGOs for renovation work of lakes and ponds.
