Wall murals across the city to be whitewashed over

To prevent posters and graffiti on road-side walls, the previous DMK Govt. had the Tamil Nadu Artists’ Association paint the walls with images relating to Tamil heritage and culture – Bharatanatyam dancers, Mammallapuram and village life.

The Chennai Corporation has now decided to whitewash these walls. According to Mayor Mr. Saidai Duraisamy, ‘We are considering putting advertisements of public welfare schemes on these walls. Posters were pasted on the walls even though crores were spent on paintings. We have whitewashed the walls to prevent sticking of posters.’

The Tamil Nadu Artists’ Association has expressed dismay at this move. A member, Mr. J.P. Krishna said, ‘It is sad to see our paintings being covered. They represent Tamil art and culture in the city. However, the previous council did not allow us to maintain the paintings. They gave the maintenance contracts to road contractors. They could have given these walls to artists for better maintenance."
