Physical education teacher must for schools with less than 250 students in TN

There are many aided as well as unaided schools in Tamil Nadu. It is now said that these schools with more than 50 students or less than 250 students must hire a physical education teacher or PE teacher atleast on honorarium basis. This is according to High Court’s order.
While disposing an appeal moved by the director of school education, a division bench comprising of Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh and Justice K. Kalyanasundaram passed the above mentioned order.
There are many persons below the age of 60 who are qualified for this post of PE teacher and are ready to accept the job of PE teacher in TN. It is now clear that these persons should be employed in the schools that have more than 50 students and less than 250 students.
The bench also stated that these PE teachers might be utilized for a time period of 2 hours in a day to teach yoga and physical education for the students. By this the physical activities of the students would be taken care off. The bench also explained how this would not be an issue for the government to adopt the above said procedure. It is important to mention that a petition moved by an aided school Shri Shanthi Vijay High School, Masinagudi, sought direction to the government to grant approval to appoint a PE teacher. On 15th April 2013, a single judge directed the concerned authorities to grant approval for the appointment of a PE teacher. The bench later modified the above order of the single judge and said the students studying in the schools must be given physical education to ensure healthy body and mind.
According to the court it is now clear that to keep the physique of the children in good condition plus to make them concentrate on their studies, children’s between the age 5 and 18 must be taught physical education along with yoga. Physical education is very important and its need must not be underestimated. In relation to the student’s strength in the schools, appropriate norms with regard to the appointment of PE teachers must be fixed.
