Frequent power cuts have been creating lots of problems to the residents of Central Chennai is known. This won’t be a problem anymore. The news is to meet the increasing demand in the power of Central Chennai and also to ease the problems of the people belonging to the Central Chennai, 5 additional sub-stations would be constructed in places like Mylapore and T. Nagar.
From the last year the power demands of the residents of Chennai have gone up by 2 percent. The substations would be making their presence felt in another two years and the residents of Central Chennai would be benefited. The demand in power in the central areas of Chennai alone had risen by 1.5 percent and that was from April 2017 to March 2018.
A senior official belonging to Tangedco spoke about the reduction in the frequency of power cuts since the year 2015. He later highlighted that these substations would be able to equip them to take greater loads of electricity. Funded by Tangedco, 3 substations would be present in T. Nagar and 2 substations would be in Mylapore and a total amount of R220 Crores would be spent on them.
More space is present near the famous Mundakanniamman temple in Mylapore and as a result of that the substation coming up in that place would be constructed at a capacity of 51 megawatt. Amount of Rs 100 crores would be spend on constructing this substation.
There are many areas near T. Nagar like West Mambalam. Ashok Nagar, CIT Nagar, Ranganathan Street etc and these areas would be benefited by the substations in T. Nagar. Likewise the places like Mandaveli, Santhome, Gopalapuram, Nungambakkam and Poes Garden would be benefited by the substations in Mylapore.
Some of the advantages that these upcoming substations could provide are better power distribution, reduction in the power cut duration, relief to overloaded electricity cables. The substations would also play their part in the erection of both high tension and low tension cables and distribution transformers. The power reaching the consumers till the last leg of power distribution process would be possible and it would be superb.
Since the year 2015, Tangedco has been in discussions with the Chennai Corporation for allotment of land for this purpose. There were delays because the local body needed this land for its developmental projects. The officials later spoke about how it was difficult to get the land in the fully development areas and how only in the last month the local body agreed to the request of Tangedco.
Discussions with the police department officials have been going on to procure land to set up substations in places like Egmore, Pudupet and Foreshore Estate etc. This was confirmed by the officials of Tangedco.
