Compared to the last year the power demand of Tamil Nadu has considerably increased leading to the power purchase from private power generating companies. The current rise in the demand is 2,000 MW more than the previous year. According to the sources of TANGEDCO the increase in demand was planned to resolve with the external purchase owing to lower wind power generation.

The peak demand calculated on Wednesday evening was 14,798MW and the same day last year it was only 12,885MW. The government is dependent on the coal power and also the sources of power generation from renewable energies are in downward spiral. The hydro generation is expected to come down owing to water demand in the dams.

The high demand was attributed to air conditioner usage in Chennai and other urban areas of Tamil Nadu. The hot weather resulted in the power consumption and in turn lead to the rise in the power said one of the senior officials of TANGEDCO.

Thermal units of TANGEDCO has only coal stock for eight days. As the wind season is expected to stop in few days the power body will fall under pressure to meet the increasing demand. Without resorting to outages the power demand will be resolves through efficient management said the official.
