Because of lack of law, the SC has ceased acceptance of Aadhar e-KYC towards new SIM card purchase. Well, you may be already knowing this. And there is no option available to get your old mobile phones deactivated.

Okay, chill, there is nothing to get panicked with this news. There are a few things you got to know in this regard. Here they are:

There is a joint statement issued by the Department of Telecommunications and Unique Identification Authority of India. This clarifies that for users who have completed eKYC with Aadhar card, they need not worry about getting their SIM card disconnected. The new process for eKYC is being worked out by either authorities.

All the old mobile numbers that you have obtained with eKYC are not to get disconnected

In the judgement rolled out by the Supreme Court, there is no clause stating that the mobile numbers already purchased using Aadhar eKYC should be disconnected. Hence, your old mobile numbers that leaned on Aadhar for KYC procedure will continue working uninterruptedly.

The eKYC will not get deleted in 6 months

There is no mandate that the telecom companies need to delete out the data pertaining to eKYC after 6 months period. The Court has clearly stated that the log should not be maintained for more than 6 months. This restriction is only for the UIDAI and not for any telecom service provider. Furthermore, the log should however be maintained at their end so as to solve any customer-raised issues in future. On the other hand, the customers may provide alternate documents and delink their Aadhar details.

When you need to provide new KYC and replace the old Aadhar eKYC, you may very well raise a request to the Telecom Company and get the Aadhar details delinked. For this, fresh OVDs need to be submitted, as stated by the DoT circular for mobile KYC.

When you get your Aadhar card details delinked and submit new KYC, there is no chance of your mobile number getting disconnected.

For the process of providing new SIM cards, the Department of Telecom shall very soon incorporate a new seamless procedure via mobile app, and this shall thoroughly comply with the Supreme Court judgement for Aadhar procedures.

In this new method involving mobile app for providing SIM cards, the subscriber’s live photos shall be involved too. It is going to be a digital process where the latitude and longitude and stamp of the subscriber will be captured. For this, the pictures on Aadhar card, voter id, etc. shall get captured. And the final SIM card authentication will be done via OTP.
