First Namma Toilets Inaugurated

The Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Minister T.K.M.Chinnayya on Wednesday inaugurated the state’s first solar,sensor-based toilets, the first of its kind being introduced in the state for the benefit of the people who have no access to toilets and prevent them from open-defection.

Named as ‘Namma toilets”, fully made of fiber reinforced polymer material was installed at the Duraiswamy Reddy Street junction, Tambaram on GST Road.

The three-units of the toilets have the facility for elderly women, women with physical disabilities. The other two units are meant for women and men.

The lighting in the stalls are to function under solar energy and the sensors will detect the movement of the users coming to toilets. The light will automatically switch on when the users come inside the Namma toilets and will switch off  after they move out.

Tambaram Municipal Commissioner S.Sivasubramanian who was present at the inaugural function said that each toilet had cost them Rs.70,000 and added the project was designed by the Municipal Administration. The Namma toilets would be helpful to some of the residents to those who have no access or facility to toilets at homes. He added that with the installation of the Namma Toilets, it is expected that it would eradicate the habit of open defection totally before the year 2023.
