At least four women, including a three-year-old girl and an Octogenarian, died in a fire-accident that took place on Thursday mid-night when the inmates of several huts were in deep sleep.
According to police, at least 12 huts in the Pappathi Amman Kovil Street in Erukkancheri caught fire when the residents of the huts were sleeping.
One of the hut-dwellers on seeing a hut burning raised an alarm and asked the other neighbours to rush outside of their huts. But before the others could realize it, the fire spread to other huts in which all the huts were destroyed. All the household articles were completely burnt in the incident, said a police official.
In the incident, when all the inmates of the huts started running outside, a three-year-old girl could not come out of her hut, and succumbed to burn injuries. Saroja (76) and Meenkashi (53) both mother and daughter who was living in together in another hut also died in the incident.
An Octogenarian, Rajammal who was alone in her hut could not run out of her hut engulfed by flames died.
The 12 gas-cylinders in all the huts were intact and the police have started investigation the real cause for the fire-accident.
Additional Police Assistant Commissioner Jayakumar, Assistant Commissioner Kho.V.Manoharan, Inspectors Sampath and Gunavarman rushed to the spot and consoled the people. They promised that a suitable action would be initiated against the persons, if anybody has hand in the incident.
