The state capital has been witnessing rains and thundershowers of varying intensity. Rain bearing clouds had been engulfing the city since early morning hours, paving way for extremely pleasant weather conditions.
The rain intensity has increased in wake of the well-marked low-pressure area which is now over Southwest Bay of Bengal off North Tamil Nadu coast.
As the system moves towards the coast, rains would now further pick up pace, accompanied with some strong winds. Now, we expect moderate showers with one or two heavy spells over the city till tomorrow.
On November 23, intensity of these rains will decrease significantly, but scattered rains will still continue. Thereafter, weather activities would almost cease. However, it would be a brief break as another spell of rain is possible over Chennai during the end of November i.e. around November 29.
During that time, we do not expect heavy to very heavy rains and only light to moderate rains would be there. By seeing this scenario, we can state that Chennai will not be able to make up to its monthly average rains. Chennai is still rain deficient by 61%.
The capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai witnessed dry weather conditions during the month of October. However, since the beginning of November, on and off rains are going on over the city, but between November 5 to 13, weather remained almost dry.
November is the second rainiest month for Chennai with an average of 374.4 mm of rain. But till now the city has only recorded around 85 mm of rain as even cyclone Gaja failed to give good rains over Chennai.
