For the first time, a rare surgery on a month-old-baby-boy was performed by implanting intraocular lenses at the Chennai Vasan Eye Care Hospital in Anna Nagar.
The parents of the baby-boy Sunitha and Kishore, a mechanic, both from Andhra Pradesh noticed that their one-month-old-baby-boy had some defect on both the eyes, and wanted to consult a doctor. A doctor asked the couple to refer the case to the Vasan Eye Care Hospital in Anna Nagar.
Dr J Arun Kumar, consultant opthalmologist with a team of doctors that baby boy could not open his eyes.The team had also found out that the baby was affected by cataract and also some calcified tissue growth over the eyes. The team also felt that the baby should be operated and the tissue had to be removed immediately.
The team performed operations twice, on Jan.21 and February 12, and implanted adult intraocular for power which could be adjusted even when the baby boy grow up.
Dr Manjula Jayakumar, speaking to newsmen said that the baby boy needed thick glasses with power +25. If the implantation was not done the baby could have developed lazy eye and the baby was saved from Glaucoma complications.
In case if the child developed short-sightedness, he could use contact lenses and if he becomes adult he could take up Lasik correction, Dr Kumar said.
