Most of the major mobile phone service providers, Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea have announced that if recharging is done for less than Rs. 35 in a month, the service connection will be cut off. Because of this, the 2G mobile phone connections of around 25 Crores customers will get cut off in a few weeks.

Airtel, Vodafone-Idea have introduced the system of minimum Rs. 35 recharge from the start of this month. For those customers, who have not recharged for a minimum of Rs. 35 for outgoing calls, the service connection would be cut in 30 days. Subsequently, even the incoming calls will be cut in 45 days.

Around 10 Crores customers of Airtel and 15 Crores customers of Vodafone-Idea recharge for less than Rs. 35 for a month. 25 Crores customers use the facility of 2 SIM cards. These customers use 1 SIM card for incoming calls and the other SIM card for making outgoing calls. So, they have the practice of recharging only for lesser amounts. Especially after the entry of Jio as a competitor, the regularity of recharging of SIM cards has come down drastically for the other competitors leading to heavy losses.

Hence, these telecom service providers have announced an increase in the minimum recharge from Rs. 10 to Rs. 35.  Airtel and Vodafone-Idea have informed that this was a necessity as the number of customers had drastically reduced after the entry of Jio and also, the recharging by the customers has come down substantially.
