Closely following the attack on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, the former arrested 22 Indian fishermen off the coast of Kalpattiya in Sri Lanka’s north. The arrest was made citing violation of the International Maritime Border. The arrest was confirmed by Prabhavati, Tuticorin’s Asst. Director of Fisheries.
Sri Lankan fishermen had recently protested saying that the Indian fishermen were ‘poaching’ in their waters.
Also, the PMO Minister of State V. Narayanaswamy said that they were on the verge of finalizing an agreement between the two countries on the fishing boundary. The boundary has caused a lot of unrest in the fishermen communities of both India and Sri Lanka.
