An announcement has been released that the present hugely popular Abirami Mega Mall complex in Chennai is all set to be rebuilt into a large, 16-storeyed Building complex with residential apartments, shopping mall, and multiplex theatres,
The theatre complex Abirami was inaugurated in the year 1976 as a 2-theatres complex. Subsequently, in the year 1982, 2 more theatres, Annai Abirami, and Sakthi Abirami were added. Later, in the year 2002, the complex was entirely changed into a new shape and form. Thus, Abirami Mall came into existence. The theatres were completely renovated with the new names 7 Star, Robot Bala Abirami, Sri Annai Abirami, and Swarna Sakthi Abirami.
In this scenario, as it has been realised that there is no future for theatres of 1000-seats capacity and now, a new plan has been conceived. Accordingly, Abirami Mega Mall will stop functioning from 1st February. No new movies will be released after the Pongal releases. The entire complex will be completely renovated and rebuilt as a 16-storeyed complex with residential apartments, shopping malls, and theatres.
The first 3 floors (ground floor, 1st floor, and 2nd floor) will comprise of theatres and shopping malls to be a commercial complex centre whereas the remaining 14 floors will be residential apartments. Preference/priority will be given to vegetarians. It is planned that the new complex will start functioning in 2 years.
