Road expansion works along Velachery Main Road is on, as the State Highways Department is stretching it between Sembakkam and Gowrivakkam. Owing to this, a number of commercial outlets along this length have got shut down including a few houses that are to get devastated. And 2 additional lanes will soon be added in this arterial road.
It was back in 2016 that the expansion works were originally announced. The Highway Department officials blame legal issues as the reason for the delay. Speaking about this, an official says, there were residents who even got stay and paused the expansion works along Velachery Main Road.
2 new lanes in next 3 months
In another 3 months, there will be 2 more additional lanes. This will be done upon sanctioning funds for the expansion works. The necessary preliminary works are being carried out now so that the work will get wrapped up soon, adds the official.
There is substantial increase in traffic along the Velachery Main Road, especially in the past half a decade. Once the 2 new lanes are laid, there will be heavy relief to all the commuters. Most of the motorists who travel between Vandalur and Kelambakkam take the Velachery Main Road through Santhoshapuram 1st main road and hence, this leaves a lot of traffic, says a resident from Gowrivakkam.
Highways Dept. shows No.1 Priority
As there is severe traffic heading towards this route, the Highways Department has decided to take up this road expansion work with very high priority.
As the works are likely to get started, the Selaiyur area along Velachery Main Road is still kept untouched. Selaiyur is notably the most important bottleneck causing sever traffic here.
As per earlier plans, the works should have actually started in January last year. About 50 ft along both the sides along the 300 metre stretch were to get reclaimed, but so far no progress is observed.
