With the deadline on 31st March approaching rapidly to a close to linking Aadhar and PAN cards, it has been ascertained that so far, only 23 Crores Aadhar-PAN links have been done throughout the country.

In an event organised by the ASSOCHAM in Delhi, the CEO of the Central Board of Direct Taxation Sushil Chandra shared:

‘The Central Board for Direct Taxation has allotted 42 Crores PAN card so far throughout the country. Only by linking Aadhar card details with PAN card, it is possible to ascertain whether the PAN car is a genuine one or a fake.

In case Aadhar card details are not linked with the PAN card, the central government will cancel these PAN cards. Only when Aadhar and PAN cards are linked, the Income Tax Department can access the individual details of incomes and expenses. As many other avenues are also linked with Aadhar cars like the PAN card, it is also possible to ascertain that all the central government welfare really reach the right citizen eligible for the same.

Last year, 5.44 Crores citizens had filed their Income Tax returns. This year, this has increased to 6.31 Crores. Thus, the Income Tax Department has been able to bring an additional 95 Lakhs new citizen under the Income Tax bracket.

The population of our country is 125 Crores. The country’s economic growth is 6.5%. With this healthy situation, only 1.5 lakhs citizens have declared earnings of over 1 Crore per annum. This is a disappointing aspect. Many Indians have own properties in foreign countries. However, they do do not disclose this while filing their Income Tax returns. This trend of not informing the facts constitutes a crime indeed. This will pave the way for taking legal action against the offending individuals.

The people who are honest and pay the Income Tax duly as per the Rules and regulations will get respect from the central government. However, those who indulge in cheating by hiding details and not paying the due Income Tax will have to face the stringent legal action taken by the central government.’
