The demand for electrical energy in Tamil Nadu has touched a new unprecedented peak crossing to 15689 MW! It is estimated that during this summer, the demand may reach up to 17000 MW.

The general average daily demand for electrical energy in Tamil Nadu is 14000 MW. During the rainy season, this comes down to 12000 MW. However, during the summer season, this goes up to 15000 MW.

There has been a severe shortage of rainfall experienced in the last 2 years.

So far, it has been a scorching summer. As a result, the usage of electrical appliances (fans, coolers, air-conditioners, etc) has increased considerably thereby increasing the demand for more electricity.

As at 7.04 PM on 27th April 2018, the demand rose to 15440 MW. This was the highest demand recorded till 27th February this year (2019). TANGEDCO has estimated that the demand for electrical energy would go up to 16000 MW this summer.

In this situation, at 6.55 PM on 28th February, the demand rose to 15448 MW.  Since then, not even 2 weeks have passed – now, at 7.20 PM on 7th March, the demand for electricity increased to 15689 MW and touched a new peak!

Fortunately, as the generation of electricity was almost equal and ready to meet this demand, there was no shortage of power. Now, it is natural to expect that during the months of April and May, it would be even hotter than at present and hence, it is expected that the demand would touch 17000 MW.
