For the third mofussil bus terminus to be constructed near Poonamallee, acquisition of adequate lands is important. Point is non-availability of adequate lands for this bus terminus near Poonamallee for west bound buses has initiated the invoking of the land acquisition act. The information is CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is likely to explore the option and source land for a bus terminus in and around Chennai.
As per the officials, planning authority requires a minimum of 15 acres of land to build a bus terminus but just 5 acres were available with the government agencies near Poonamallee. It was pointed out by a senior official belonging to CMDA that 3 locations near Poonamallee were inspected and but none of the locations had the quantum of land that was needed for the purpose. He finally spoke about how the only option available was to acquire lands from private people.
It must be noted that the implementation of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2015 is time consuming and expensive. As the Thirumazhisai satellite town is situated about 7 km from Poonamallee, it was not considered by the CMDA for the land acquisition purpose. The official later highlighted that the land parcel must be present around Poonamallee and Thirumazhisai satellite town was quite far away.
For the west bound buses plying on the Sriperumbudur route for places like Vellore, Dharmapuri, Salem, Krishnagiri and Coimbatore, CMDA has been planning to set up a third bus terminus is known. The CMBT or Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus located at Koyambedu in Chennai is highly congested and this setting up of a third bus terminus near Poonamallee was a part of larger plan to decongest the CMBT. At Madhavaram on GNT Road, the planning authority had already built a bus terminus for north as well as for AP bound buses.
