People from all over Tamil Nadu and the Tamil Diaspora around  the world celebrated Panguni Uttiram on Tuesday. This is the day  the star Uttiram falls in the Tamil month of Panguni. The day also coincides with the full moon and so adds to its auspiciousness. In Sanskrit, this day is called Meena Uttara Phalguni.

This holy day celebrates married life and the life of a grahastan (householder). This is the day Murugan married Devanai, Uma married Parameshwaran and Andal married Rangamannar. The Valmiki Ramayana says that this is also the day Rama married Sita.

Tamil Hindus pray to Lord Murugan and carry the kavadi as a fulfillment of vows. Murugan temples in Tamil Nadu and Chennai (especially Vadapalani) saw thousands of devotees paying their obeisance to the Lord.
