Lack of piped water supply in Pallavaram and Chromepet

Posted on: 21/Aug/2019 10:12:09 AM
For over 2 months, residents belonging to Pallavaram and Chromepet did not get piped water supply. On Tuesday, these residents took part in a protest to highlight their issues. Important information is this is the second time the residents are taking part in the protests.

Outside the Pallavaram Municipality office, residents protested with empty bearing cans and play cards and caught the attention of many. Since 29th May 2019 onwards the New Colony that falls under wards 38 and 39 has not been supplied with Palar water. President of Chromepet New Colony Residents Welfare Association, Mr. V. Santhanam led the protest.

He complained about how the residents have not received even a single drop of water through the pipelines for more than 80 days now. Point is the officials of Pallavaram Municipality claimed to be supplying 25 litres of water every day from 2 sources namely Palar river and CMWSSB or Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board. Private water tankers have been supplying water for the residents to meet their every day needs. This was as per the residents who were forced to depend on the private water tankers.

Petitions have been given to the authorities of the municipality department but still no action has been taken to mitigate the situation. It is shocking to note that multi storey apartments with 120 flats have not been supplied with piped water for more than 6 months. This was as per a resident of Nehru Nagar. It was later pointed out by a senior official of the municipality that TNWSDB was pumping only 5 to 15 lakhs litres of water every day. To fulfil the needs of all the wards, the municipality has been having a tough time. Information is the municipality would take steps to supply water atleast every 15 days in the coming weeks.
