It is known that the Veeranam tank is beginning to receive Cauvery water through the Vadavar channel. As a result of this, the chances of Chennai getting stable water supply has brightened.

An inflow of 570 cusecs was recorded by the Veeranam tank on the morning of Friday and later in the day the flow rose to 1364 cusecs. Against the total capacity of 1465 mcft, the storage is 153 million cubic feet or mcft. This was later confirmed by an official belonging to the Public Works Department of PWD. The drawal for Chennai was 26 cusecs in the view of poor storage of the tank. In a week to 10 days of time, the tank water level is bound to go up substantially and by this the drawal would also go up.

It was mentioned by an official of a water agency that Chennai metro water department is keen on drawing atleast 120 mld at the earliest and it could go up to a maximum of 180 mld. The PWD and MWD officials have revealed that for the Chennai city to get its share of Krishna water it would take few more weeks. This was in the light of Srisailam dam overflowing. It is now said that the Chennai residents would have to wait till the middle of the month of September. This was according to the present calculations.

Point to be taken into account here is water transfer has to be effected from Srisailam to Somasila first and then to Kandaleru before flowing to Chennai by 152 km long Kandaleru-Poondi canal. It is important to note that the storage in both Somasila and Kandaleru is much below the point of drawal for transfer.

It must not be forgotten that just a fortnight back the chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswamy requested the chief minister of AP, Mr. Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to release 8 tmcft of Krishna water for the city of Chennai and the chief minister of AP replied positively.

The storage in Somasila stood at 11.3 tmc ft and the storage in Kandleru stood at 3.8 tmc ft. Point is these 2 reservoirs must have a minimum of 21.5 tmc ft and 6.4 tmc ft respectively. Presently Somasila is receiving about 24,600 cusecs and the storage would go up by 2 tmc ft a day if this trend continues. To commence water release, it would take a minimum of 15 days for the authorities. This was as per the officials.
