For the sake of Velankanni festival in Besant Nagar, traffic to be diverted

In south Chennai, Besant Nagar is an important locality. Annai Velankanni church of Besant Nagar is now the talk of the town because of the annual 11 day festival that would begin in this church from Thursday.

It is revealed that police have planned to modify the traffic in and around Besant Nagar for this 11 day festival of this famous church. Information that has come out is Greater Chennai traffic police would not allow parking of vehicles on the roads including 4th Main Road,  3rd Avenue, 2nd Avenue, 6th Avenue and 7th Avenues in this place due to the fact that madha procession would be taking place.

On Thursday, MTC buses would not be allowed towards Besant Avenue through ML Park from 2 pm onwards. It is revealed that the MTC buses would be diverted through the Lattice Bridge Road, MG Road and Besant Nagar 1st Main Road.

It must be taken into account that buses from Besant Nagar terminus to Tiruvanmiyur would go through Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue, LB Road. MTC buses going to Mylapore and Kotturpuram would use the Besant Avenue Road and ML Park.

Point to be noted here is vehicles would not be allowed to proceed towards the church from MG Road to 7th Avenue junction, 6th Avenue to 4th Main Road junction and 4th main Road to 3rd Avenue junction from 4 pm in the evening. According to an official belonging to the traffic department it is clear that for atleast a hour traffic would be affected on these above said roads till the madha procession passes through. He added that few more on the spot changes would be done based on the crowd.

There are few schools located in and around Besant Nagar and it is now brought out that these schools would work till afternoon due to traffic jams and diversions.
