The Chennai Traffic Police Department has announced that the 2-way traffic will be reintroduced in Chennai Anna Salai on today (Wednesday, 11th September) and tomorrow (Thursday, 12th September).

The details:

Due to the construction activities of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, several traffic changes were carried out during the year 2011. The traffic was entirely blocked in some routes. Some routes were rendered as 1-way traffic.

Vehicles were not allowed to ply from Anna Salai via LIC/Spencer’s.  These vehicles had to go via general Patters Road, Whites Road, and Express Avenue to reach Anna Salai.

The section from Anna Flyover to Simpson became 1-way traffic. Same was imposed in section Nandanam-Teynampet. For this purpose, some traffic changes were carried out in the surrounding areas as well.

As such, this led to severe traffic congestion.

The times passed with the Chennai Metro construction activities progressing.  10 years passed as the MTRL project was completed. The Metro Services in the relevant sections commenced recently.

As the repair/reconstruction work on these link roads was not completed, there was a delay in restoring traffic clearance. Now, the concerned road renovation /repair work has been reported to be completed. Conditions are right to restart the 2-way traffic from Anna Salai to general Patters Road and from Anna Salai to White’s Road.

The Department of Traffic of the Chennai Metro City has announced that the 2-way traffic would be restored in the above sections on a trial–basis on 11th (Wednesday, today) and 12th (Thursday, tomorrow) September.

As per the report released by the Traffic department, the section between Anna Salai White’s Road junction to Wellington junction is changed into 2-way traffic.

Vehicles coming from Royappettah Tower clock will be allowed to enter Anna Salai. Similarly vehicles from Anna Salai proceeding to the Royappettah clock-towers will be allowed via White’s Road.

There are no changes in the traffic system for the vehicles coming from Anna Flyover towards Anna Salai. The vehicles proceeding from Anna Statue to Gemini or Teynampet can go via LIC and TVS towards Anna Flyover.

The vehicles proceeding from Anna Salai to Binny Road can take the right turn after the Spencers’ junction. Vehicles coming from Bharathi Salai can reach Anna Salai via G. P. Road and White’s Road.

Vehicles comiming from Binny Road can turn right at the Spencers’ junction and proceed to Anna Salai/Anna Flyover.

The route from Anna Salai to White’s Road via Smith Road has been blocked. The vehicles proceeding from White’s Road to Anna Salai can take a left turn at Thiru. Vi. Ka. Road and then reach Anna Salai through Satyam Theatre, Peters Road.

The traffic department officials informed that the decision regarding complete restoration of 2-way traffic will be taken based on the response from the vehicle drivers based on their 2 days’ experience (11th & 12th September).
