Posted on: 24/Sep/2019 10:15:00 AM
The city of Chennai has been experiencing rains now and this has made Chennai pleasant.  The meteorologists have confirmed that Chennai and most parts of TN would get rains for 3 or 4 days. This could be due to the weather system over the Bay of Bengal moving towards TN.

Upper air circulation over the Bay of Bengal was moving towards the land region of TN and this was according to Mr. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre. Information is there would be moderate rains over most places in TN till 26th September. He explained how some places in Chennai could get light to moderate rains in the evening or in the night time. It is important to mention that Nungambakkam recorded just 1 cm of rain whereas Meenambakkam got 5 cm of rain on Monday.

Till now, the Chennai district has received nearly 54 cms of rainfall and this was in excess of average rainfall by 34%. The superb piece of news is current rains have generated inflow into the Chennai reservoirs especially Poondi reservoir. The inflow generated from catchment areas has increased the combined storage of 4 reservoirs to 426 million cubic feet on Monday.

Previously, the storage was just 15 mcft. It is amazing to note that Poondi reservoir got 182 cusecs which were the highest volume of inflow among the lakes. It must be noted that the catchment areas of Kosasthalaiyar River have been receiving floodwater from areas upstream in Pallipattu region.

Heavy to very heavy rains up to 24.4 cm would be there in few places in 15 districts and that includes Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Sivagangai, and Nagapattinam. This would be on Tuesday. On Wednesday, one or 2 places belonging to few districts of south TN including Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli along with coastal districts might get heavy to very heavy rains.
