Chennai residents to get increased water supply soon

The first half of the year 2019 was not good for the Chennai people. The lack of rains created water crisis issue and the residents had very tough time dealing with it. Recently Krishna water was received in Chennai and it made huge noises.
The latest news is in Chennai drinking water supply is likely to increase in this October month. Information collected is with the steady inflow of water from Krishna River in AP the WRD is planning to resume its withdrawal from Puzhal Lake by the middle of October.
As of now, water is stored in Poondi reservoir and it would be transferred to Puzhal. From this Puzhal, the water would be sent to Kilpauk Water works for treatment and finally it would be distributed to the Chennai residents. The superb information is in the past 1 week of time nearly 365 mc ft of water has been added to the Poondi storage.
The WRD officials have revealed that on Friday the Kandaleru- Poondi canal got 722 cusecs of water and this time the state received up to 840 cusecs of Krishna water. According to the officials belonging to WRD it is clear that it was one of the highest inflows in the recent years. The storage of the reservoir has been improved by the recent rains in Tiruvallur in September is known.
The officials of WRD have mentioned that at present the water body has got storage of 742 mcft against a capacity of 3231 mcft. Point to be noted is other reservoirs in places like Cholavaram, Puzhal and Chembarambakkam remain mostly dry. Once the storage in the Poondi reservoir touches 1000 mc ft then there are plans to transfer water to Puzhal. This was confirmed by the MWD officials.
It is brought out that after 5 months water would be drawn from Puzhal. To stabilize water supply in central and in the northern parts of Chennai, the reservoir was selected is known. Information is water supply network in south Chennai is fed by sources including the Veeranam tank and abandoned quarries of Erumaiyur. It must be noted that currently Chennai city gets 525 million litres of water on alternate days.
