Daily life would not be easy when a person gets affected with conjunctivitis. This viral infection causes constant watery discharge from the eyes plus it also lead to reddish and itchy eyes in those affected with this infection.  It must be taken into account that conjunctivitis could spreads from one person to the other rapidly.

Also called as pink eye or Madras eye, conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the outermost covering of the eyeball and the inner layer of the eyelid. This viral infection is back again in the city of Chennai. It is known that adenovirus is responsible for nearly 90% of all conjunctivitis.

Head of medical services, Dr. Agarwal eye hospital, Dr. Soundari mentioned about how from one eye the viral infection spreads to another eye and how she has been coming across atleast 5 patients with this eye issue every day. The point here is people affected by this conjunctivitis issue visit her only after trying some antibiotics that don’t work for this eye infection issue.

According to senior ophthalmologist, Dr. M. Anand Babu, conjunctivitis is the inflammation of conjunctiva, the normally transparent membrane that sits on the top of sclera or white part of the eye. It is known that conjunctiva is responsible for the secretion of mucus and tears and by this the eyes get lubricated.  He explained about how the eyes become pink due to the blood vessels that dilate in response to the irritation and inflammation due to the virus.

Important Information is uneasiness from conjunctivitis settles down in 3 or 4 days but the affected persons are advised to stay away in isolation for atleast 10 days. Dr. Anand Babu spoke about how the eye secretions and droplets from the respiratory tract of the infected persons transmit the virus rapidly. He concluded that this eye infection is highly contagious and causes epidemics in schools, colleges etc.
