In the Tiruvallur district a fifth reservoir is being constructed for providing the water supply to the Chennai residents. It is now revealed that Chennai would have to wait for longer time to make use of this 5th reservoir.

For the last 2 months, continuous rains in Uthukottai-Gummidipoondi stretch have been delaying the work. Information is it would take another 4 more months to complete the construction work.

As per the PWD initial plan by 30th of September the reservoir was supposed to be ready. It is known that this reservoir is built by combining 2 lakes in Thervoy Kandigai and Kannakottai villages.

It was brought out by a senior official belonging to PWD that 20 % of the work is still pending and the project is again delayed. He spoke about how by 31st October PWD is trying to complete a portion of the reservoir so that nearly 200 mcft of water could be stored when NE monsoon sets in. He concluded that still 60 days were needed to complete crucial works. The continuous rains have been an issue as they have hampered the construction works and in the last 2 months the construction workers worked for just 10 days due to the rains.

It is revealed that the supply of rough stone was not regular and these rough stones were got from a place 100 km away. Important piece of information is rough stones have been used to cover the watershed area of the reservoir.

The point here is even if rains lightly the trucks carrying rough stones would find it difficult to enter the site. For the last 6 years, this project has been going on and it faced opposition from the local villagers over land acquisition. It was in the month of October in 2018 the construction of the reservoir began is known.
