Most of us would have received emails asking about our personal information etc. Isn’t it!!
How many of us would have thought that this type of email could create issues for us?
It is important to mention that phishing is a type of cyber attack (oldest type of cyber attack belonging to the 1990s) and it involves collecting personal details of a person by using deceptive emails and websites. Point to be noted is the main objective of phishing is to trick the email recipient into believing that the message is something they want or need. The email received could be a note from someone to click or download etc or it could also be a request from their bank etc requesting information.
It is important to note that what distinguishes phishing is the form of the message. Here, the attackers pretend to be a trusted entity of some kind. Point is it might be a real person or it could be a company the victim might do business with also. It is brought out that this type of cyber attack is still one of the most widespread and highly destructive.
It is worthy to note that the work of cybercriminals has been made easy due to the availability of phishing kits. Information is phishing kits and emails are available in the dark web and when the phishing kit is installed then the attacker just needs to send emails to the victims. The attackers or phishers could also use social networking sites like Twitter, Linkedin and FB etc of the person to get details about him or her.
By these clues, a phishing email could be identified.
The attackers could use sub-domains, misspelled URLs or suspicious URLs etc and this would indicate it is a phishing email.
It must be noted that we could get emails with messages written to create fear or a sense of urgency indicating it is a phishing email. Sometimes, the message could include a request to verify personal details like financial details or a password. This also indicates that it is a phishing email.
