Chennai reservoirs get copious inflow of water now

Beginning from Friday afternoon, rainfall in the state of TN would start to ease. The reason for that is the severe cyclonic storm ‘Maha’ has moved further over east-central Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep Sea.

At this point of time, it is revealed that the two reservoirs that supply water to Chennai namely Red-Hills reservoir and Poondi reservoir got copious inflows from the catchment areas such as Vellanurkandigai, Pammadukulam and Arikambedu.

The important information is on Thursday stretch of Pothur- Red Hills Road was flooded with rainwater flowing into the Red Hills Lake.

It was later pointed out by some officials belonging to the WRD that Red- Hills reservoir receives surplus water from lakes like Vellanur Periaeri and Pothur plus it also receives floodwater runoff from areas like Morai, Pothur, Pakkam, Kovilpadagai and Thirumullaivoyal. Point to be noted is overnight rains have translated into heavy inflow of 1059 cusecs into Red Hills Lake and out of 1059 cusecs nearly 380 cusecs of water was transferred from Poondi Lake for supply of water.

A resident belonging to Konimedu spoke about how the new bridge adjacent to the road has made travelling on the stretch better. Against a total capacity of 3231 mcft, Poondi reservoir has now got 1648 mcft and that is nearly 50 % full. An inflow of 1320 cusecs has been received by Poondi reservoir and this includes inflow from the Krishna River also.

It is worthy to mention that storage in other major reservoirs such as Chembarambakkam and Cholavaram are low even now. The combined storage of 4 reservoirs has gone up by 200 mcft and that is equal to nearly one week’s water supply.

Till Friday morning, many places in TN might get moderate rainfall and one or two places in districts like Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Krishnagiri and Salem might get heavy to very heavy rainfall. The rains might reduce from Friday afternoon and up to 50% of weather stations in TN might receive rains. Till Saturday, Chennai would get light to moderate rains in some places.

It is important to mention that on 3rd November there are prospects of low pressure over Andaman Sea and it is likely to intensify into depression over east-central Bay of Bengal in the next 2 days. This has been confirmed by Mr. Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology. He explained about how the movement of the system would play an important role in determining the extent of its impact in the state of TN.
